How to Calculate Lumber Needed
Buying the right amount of lumber is mostly a volume problem dressed up as a shopping list. Hardwood yards, many softwood suppliers, and material takeoffs quote wood in board feet — a unit that captures thickness, width, and length in one number. Get the board-feet math right, add a realistic waste factor, and you avoid both mid-project shortages and a garage full of unused stock.

What is a board foot?
One board foot (BF or fbm, foot board measure) is a volume of wood equal to:

Think of a board one inch thick, one foot wide, and one foot long. Any piece of lumber whose volume equals that amount is one board foot, regardless of how the dimensions are arranged.
The board feet formula
For a single piece:

Where:
- T = thickness in inches
- W = width in inches
- L = length in feet
The 12 in the denominator converts the product of inches × inches × feet into board feet (because 12\ \textin × 1\ \textft of face area at 1 in thick is one board foot).
For multiple identical pieces:

Where N is the number of pieces.
Worked example — one board
A 2×6 that is 10 feet long:

Worked example — a small stack
Twelve pieces of 1×8 × 8 ft:

Nominal size versus actual size
Construction lumber is sold by nominal dimensions — the size before drying and planing. The actual size is smaller:
Which size goes in the formula? For pricing and ordering at most softwood lumberyards, use nominal thickness and width. That is how the industry traditionally bills board feet for framing lumber. For true physical volume (shipping weight, moisture content studies, or some hardwood dealers who bill on dressed size), use actual dimensions.
Always confirm with your supplier. Hardwood is often sold by board feet using the rough or surfaced thickness you specify (for example, 4/4, 5/4, 8/4 — quarters of an inch).
Hardwood thickness in quarters
Hardwood thickness is commonly quoted in quarters:
A 5/4 × 6 in × 8 ft board:

Board feet versus linear feet
Linear feet (lin ft) ignore thickness and width — they only count length. Use linear feet when every piece has the same cross-section and you are buying by the stick (for example, trim, decking sold by the piece, or fence boards).

Board feet are better when:
- You compare cost across different thicknesses and widths
- A yard sells mixed stock by volume
- You are estimating a mixed takeoff for a materials schedule
You can convert when thickness and width are known:

Example. 40 linear feet of 2×4:
\textBF = 40 × (2 × 4)/(12) = 40 × (8)/(12) = 26.67\ \textboard feet
Estimating for a project
A practical takeoff has four steps:
- List every member — joists, studs, plates, rafters, fascia, decking, etc., with quantity, nominal size, and length.
- Compute board feet for each line with (T × W × L)/(12), then sum.
- Add waste — typically 5–15% depending on the work (see below).
- Round up to purchasable lengths — lumber comes in standard lengths (8, 10, 12, 14, 16 ft). Buying 16 ft stock and cutting to 14 ft still means you paid for 16 ft.
Waste guidelines
\textOrder BF = \textNet BF × (1 + w)
Where w is the waste fraction (for example, 0.10 for 10%).
Worked example — deck joists
A deck needs twenty 2×8 joists at 12 ft, plus a 10% waste factor:
\textNet BF = 20 × (2 × 8 × 12)/(12) = 20 × 16 = 320\ \textBF
\textOrder BF = 320 × 1.10 = 352\ \textboard feet
You would still order twenty-two 12 ft 2×8s (or twenty 12s plus a couple of extras), not a fractional piece — the board-feet total is for budgeting and comparing quotes.
Worked example — wall studs
A wall 24 ft long with studs at 16 in on center, 8 ft tall, plus plates.
Number of studs (including ends):
N_\mathrmstuds = (24 × 12)/(16) + 1 = 18 + 1 = 19
Use 2×4 × 8 ft studs:
\textStud BF = 19 × (2 × 4 × 8)/(12) = 19 × (64)/(12) = 101.33\ \textBF
Double top plate and single bottom plate (three runs of 24 ft of 2×4):
\textPlate BF = 3 × (2 × 4 × 24)/(12) = 3 × 16 = 48\ \textBF
\textNet = 101.33 + 48 = 149.33\ \textBF
With 10% waste:
\textOrder ≈ 164\ \textboard feet
Coverage estimates for decking and flooring
When boards of known face width cover an area:
\textLinear feet needed = (A)/(w_\mathrmft)
Where A is area in square feet and w_\mathrmft is the installed face width in feet (for example, a 5.5 in actual face width is 5.5/12 = 0.458 ft).
Then convert to board feet if required, and add waste for cuts and bad boards.
Example. A 12 ft × 16 ft deck (192 sq ft) with 5.5 in face-width decking:
\textLin ft = (192)/(5.5/12) = (192)/(0.4583) ≈ 419\ \textlinear feet
If the decking is sold as 5/4 × 6 (use nominal 1.25 × 6 for board feet):
\textBF = 419 × (1.25 × 6)/(12) = 419 × 0.625 ≈ 262\ \textBF
Add 10–15% for waste and starter cuts.
Metric conversion
Outside North America, lumber is often sold in cubic metres or by linear metres of a given section. Approximate conversion:
1\ \textboard foot = 0.00236\ \textm^3
\textm^3 = \textBF × 0.00236
A cubic metre is about 424 board feet.
Applications
Framing takeoffs. Sum board feet by member type for studs, joists, and rafters; convert to piece counts at standard lengths for the purchase order.
Hardwood furniture and cabinetry. Quote and buy in board feet; expect higher waste when selecting for grain and defects.
Comparing bids. Two quotes for "2×6 stock" are easier to compare when both are expressed in board feet at the same nominal basis.
Shipping and weight. Rough green lumber weight can be estimated from volume once you know species density; board feet give you that volume.
Cost control. Tracking BF used versus BF purchased over a job reveals whether waste assumptions were realistic.
Common mistakes
Mixing inches and feet in length. Length L must be in feet. A 96-inch board is 8 ft — if you put 96 into the formula you overstate board feet by a factor of 12.
Using actual size when the yard bills nominal (or the reverse). Confirm the billing basis before you trust a quote comparison.
Forgetting to buy in standard lengths. Net board feet from a cut list is not the same as what you pay for when offcuts are unavoidable.
Underestimating waste on angled work. Hip roofs, diagonal decking, and herringbone patterns eat more stock than a rectangular floor.
Counting only "visible" boards. Plates, blocking, ledgers, and starter courses add up.
Confusing board feet with square feet. Square feet measure area; board feet measure volume. A 100 sq ft deck is not 100 board feet of lumber.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 2×4 really 2 by 4 inches? No. After drying and surfacing, a standard construction 2×4 is typically 1.5 × 3.5 inches. The nominal name is historical.
Do I always use nominal dimensions in the board-feet formula? For most softwood framing purchases, yes. For some hardwood and specialty dealers, ask whether they bill on rough or dressed size.
How many board feet are in a 2×4×8? (2 × 4 × 8)/(12) = 5.33 board feet (nominal).
What waste percent should I use? Start at 10% for ordinary framing. Increase for complex cuts, matching grain, or lower-grade stock with more defects.
Can I calculate board feet from cubic inches? Yes: divide cubic inches by 144. That is the definition of a board foot.
Why divide by 12, not 144? Because length is already in feet. If all three dimensions were in inches, you would use \fracT × W × L_\mathrmin144.
